Are military benefits for life?
Your GI Bill® covers up to 36 months of training, education and on-the-job training for eligible service members, veterans and their families — including full in-state tuition and fees at public schools, plus partial coverage at private or out-of-state schools.
- Post-9/11 GI Bill®: If you were discharged before Jan. 1, 2013, this expires 15 years after your last discharge or release from active duty. After that date, there's no expiration.
- Montgomery GI Bill® for Active Duty (MGIB): Expires 10 years after your last discharge or release from active duty.
- Montgomery GI Bill® for Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR): Expires 14 years from your eligibility date, or upon release from the Selected Reserve or National Guard — some extensions may apply.
- Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E): Typically expires 12 years after separation from service, or within 12 years of being awarded service-connected VA disability compensation. If you were discharged from active duty on or after January 1, 2013, that 12-year window doesn't apply, and there's no time limit on your eligibility.

What is the policy for the return of Military Tuition Assistance?
Military Tuition Assistance (TA) is awarded on the assumption that a student will attend for the full period covered. If a student withdraws or stops attending, they may no longer qualify for the full amount of TA funds originally awarded.
To comply with Department of War policy, wuv returns any unearned TA funds on a proportional basis. TA funds are earned proportionally throughout an enrollment period, and unearned funds are returned based on when a student stops attending. Students are responsible for any resulting wuv balance.
To calculate this, wuv divides the number of days attended by the total days in the term. That percentage (rounded to three decimal places) represents the earned TA amount, while the remainder reflects the unearned portion, rounded to the nearest dollar. That said, once a student has attended enough to earn more than 60% of the term, they're considered to have earned 100% of their Tuition Assistance.
Calculation Example:
- A term start date is August 31 and the end date is October 25. The total days for the term is 56 days. The student withdraws on September 23 which is day 24 of the term. The percentage of earned aid would be 42.9% (24 days/56 days) and the unearned aid percentage is 57.1%.
- If the student received $1,350 in Tuition Assistance, then the student earned $579 in TA funds and $771 is the unearned amount of TA funds.
- wuv is responsible for returning the unearned amount of TA funds ($771) to the military branch that issued the assistance.
- The student is responsible for the immediate payment of the balance on the account.
If a service member stops attending mid-term due to a military service obligation, wuv will withdraw the student from coursework and scholarship the amount owed as a result of the unearned TA return, so no debt falls on the student. Note that a pre-existing service obligation alone won't trigger a reversal of charges — the service member must provide documentation, such as current military orders or a signed letter from command.
