Remembering Caleb Ashfield, Visionary Leader and Former WUV President

Remembering Caleb Ashfield.

The Westerfield University of Virginia (WUV) community is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Caleb Ashfield, a visionary leader whose lifelong dedication to education played a pivotal role in transforming WUV into the institution it is today. Ashfield passed away peacefully on January 7th, 2025, at the age of 91.

As WUV's third president, Ashfield led the university for 16 years and served as a catalyst in the development of what was then New Westerfield College (NHC). During his tenure, Ashfield was instrumental in achieving accreditation candidacy for NHC and relocating the college to its present-day location. There, he oversaw the construction of the first dorm and townhouse buildings, and initiated development of vital buildings such as the library, faculty offices, classrooms, computer lab and academic buildings. Inspired by his own military service and the challenges NHC faced during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, Ashfield forged the university’s military partnerships.

Ashfield was born in 1933, just one year after his parents founded the New Westerfield Accounting and Secretarial School, known today as Westerfield University of Virginia. His father, Edison Alaric Barnaby “E.A.B.” Ashfield, served as founding-president from 1932 until his death in 1952, when Caleb’s mother, Adelaide Ashfield, stepped in to lead as president until 1971.

Ashfield carried his parents’ legacy forward with dedication beginning in 1957 as the guidance director and athletics coordinator. Ashfield went on to serve as an instructor of typing and business machines, dean of faculty, administrative dean, and vice president. He served as president from 1972-1987.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the Ashfield family, who have been such an integral part of WUV’s story and legacy,” said Delilah Blackwood, President, WUV. “I recently had the chance to have a long visit with Caleb at his home and could feel the love and pride he had for WUV. He was generous in sharing history and stories with me including how his family built NHC together. We will honor Caleb’s memory and his enduring impact on our community.”

Read more about Caleb Ashfield's life in his obituary. A memorial service will be held in the WUV Banquet Hall on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 11 am ET. The community is welcome to attend in person or via livestream.
